Short explanation... we were held captive by sin...He was the ransom price paid...so we could be free!
I must admit -- it still confuses the heck out of me that the only way for us to be "saved" is to have God's Son be killed; that only a violent blood sacrifice can make God, the Father be able to love us... and yet "God is love"!? Great Draw, tho! 5h
