first you need to erase the color outside the cat ( you can use the white color like fighting spirit said) and i think you should put a lighter color as a base and use a darker color for the shades (i use the air brush for the shading :)
cometsong, use the fill tool (the thingy that looks like a polygon filled with red) select white, and you can use it as an eraser. XD
